In Celebration of Black History Month, Brown Plus Establishes Scholarships to Address Diversity in Accounting

As we celebrate Black History Month, Brown Plus continues to look for ways that we can make an impact and create change, especially within our region and profession. A study released this week by the Institute of Management Accountants named lack of exposure to the profession prior to college and insufficient support during college as two contributing factors that disproportionately reduce the accounting profession’s attractiveness to underrepresented groups. These statistics show that we need to do more to show students of all backgrounds that accounting is a viable and attainable career.

To help address this issue, Brown Plus will be starting an annual scholarship with the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) for students who are majoring in accounting, as well as providing a contribution to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Foundation to cover a minority student in our region to attend the Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop, which aims to strengthen students’ professional skills and understanding of the benefits of the CPA designation.

Our mission at Brown Plus is to help people achieve extraordinary outcomes, and we hope that these contributions will be a step in the right direction to help create a more diverse and equitable industry.
