Maryland Tax Connect Is Coming: What Individual and Business Taxpayers Need to Know

The Comptroller of Maryland has announced that Maryland Tax Connect, the state’s secure online tax portal, will expand to serve individual taxpayers beginning September 1, 2026. This marks the first comprehensive modernization of Maryland’s tax infrastructure in more than 30 years, representing one of the most significant technology investments the state has made in a generation.
Maryland Tax Connect is already in use by Maryland business owners to file returns, manage accounts and communicate with the Comptroller’s office. Starting September 1, those same capabilities will be available to individual filers, including the ability to file income tax returns, make estimated payments, set up payment plans and more. The portal will be free to use for all Maryland individual taxpayers.
What Maryland Tax Connect Offers Individual Taxpayers
Once live, the new portal will replace legacy systems, such as iFile and the current online bill payment system, providing a more modern and user-friendly experience. Individual taxpayers will be able to access real-time account balances, complete filing history, direct debit and e-check payment options and notice history, all without needing to contact the Comptroller’s office. The portal will be available 24/7, giving taxpayers greater flexibility to manage their state income taxes on their own schedule.
Temporary Service Interruptions: What to Expect
Transitioning more than four billion tax records to a new cloud-based system requires taking most services temporarily offline beginning in late July. The transition is deliberately scheduled for the end of August, when tax activity across the state is at its lowest, in order to minimize disruption.
Business taxpayers using Maryland Tax Connect will experience service interruptions from August 21-31. Be sure to file/pay returns due in August by end of day 8/20/2026.
If you have a payment due or a return to file before September 1, it is important to be aware of the following deadlines and plan accordingly.
| July 24, 2026 — 4:30 p.m. | Last day for in-person paper check payments at Comptroller branch offices for personal income, pass-through entity and fiduciary taxes. Branch offices close at 4:30 p.m. Electronic payments and money orders will continue to be accepted through July 29. The Comptroller’s office will resume accepting paper checks on September 1. |
| July 29, 2026 — 11:59 p.m. | Last day for individuals to electronically file a return or make a payment through the current online system. Online filing and payments for individuals will resume on September 1 in Maryland Tax Connect. |
| August 20, 2026 — 11:59 p.m. | Last day to electronically file and pay business taxes through the Maryland Tax Connect portal. Normal business tax operations resume on September 1. |
| August 21–31, 2026 | All systems are offline for final data migration. During this period, payments by e-check and credit card will be accepted and debited from bank accounts but will not be posted to taxpayer accounts until after September 1. | September 1, 2026 | Maryland Tax Connect for Individual Taxpayers goes live. All services resume in the new portal, and taxpayers can begin using the platform to file returns, make payments and manage their Maryland income tax accounts. |
